How Messaging Works on ArtStation
ArtStation Messaging allows artists, recruiters, studios, and buyers to connect directly on the platform. To help reduce spam and scams while supporting professional outreach, ArtStation uses a Message Request system for new conversations.
This article explains how Message Requests work, how messages are organized, and how to manage your settings.
Starting a Conversation
If you want to contact someone you’re not already connected with, you’ll need to send a Message Request.
When sending a Message Request, you must:
Select a message type: General or Business
Include a short message explaining why you’d like to connect
When You Can Message Directly
You can send a direct message (without a request) in the following cases:
You’re continuing an existing conversation
The user follows you (users can message their followers directly)
You are contacting a seller about a Marketplace purchase
You are a recruiter with an active job subscription or job posting sending a Recruitment message
Reporting Message Requests
If you receive a suspicious or inappropriate Message Request, you can report it for review by ArtStation’s Trust & Safety team.
To report the message, simply click on "Report abuse" on the top right of the message page, and follow the flow.
We recommend reviewing messages carefully before accepting requests. ArtStation will never ask for passwords, sensitive personal information, or payments through unofficial links.
Using Messaging on Mobile
Messaging features are available on both the ArtStation website and mobile apps.
To ensure proper Message Request functionality, please keep your app updated to the latest version. Older versions may not support the current messaging system.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Message Request?
A Message Request is the first step in starting a conversation with someone you are not already connected with. The recipient must accept the request before messaging can continue.
Can recruiters still contact artists?
Yes. Recruiters with an active job subscription or job posting can send Recruitment messages. Other types of outreach may require a Message Request, depending on the situation.
If you have questions about a specific message, contact Support. If you believe you’ve encountered suspicious activity, report it directly from your Messaging area.
